debian and eth0:0

I often use eth0:0 to emulate a second interface. I have been struggeling with ubuntu and debian to get this interface brought up automatically. It appears to be nessecary to set both interfaces to allow-hotplug eth0[:0].

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow-hotplug eth0:0
auto eth0:0
iface eth0:0 inet static
address 10.0.1.1
network 10.0.1.0
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.0.1
